Here we are at the beginning of a new year; new possibilities, new opportunities, new life! For me, the new year sparks real introspection. Looking at what has passed, and looking ahead to what can be is what fills my memories and my hopes.
Today marks the one year anniversary of the passing of our dear Kathy Ezzell. Kathy was a force to be reckoned with. She was the long time chair of worship, as well as filling other positions during her time at Preston Hollow. She saw us through some major renovations, and also some major transitions. I miss Kathy so very much, she was always a great sounding board, and a great friend.
Our worship team has grown and matured during this past year, we owe a great debt of gratitude to Jim Gray and all the members of the worship team. They have guided us as our worship has blossomed into a very intimate, spiritually uplifting, and to use Jim’s word, lush experience. We are truly blessed. Kathy was the cheerleader for the changes we were seeking to make. She gave us so much of herself.
The past year we have completed more renovations in our Child Development Center, gathering spaces and offices. We named our worship center in honor of Kathy Ezzell. We re-named our renovated parlor the Margaret Hamilton Gathering Room, in honor of our dear Margaret who will soon be moving to new adventures.
Its been a year of many changes, and yet the church moves forward. We are blessed beyond measure and we are grateful for God’s beneficence.
My understanding of blessings is, when blessings are received, we are to in turn bless others. How will Preston Hollow Church bless others in this new year? In the year past, we have endeavored to have a mission focus each month, a way to address the needs of our wider community, both local and international. In December we were able to defray over $400,000 of medical debt. We have taken up offerings to support the work of the World Central Kitchen, we have packed meals, we have supported missionaries, we have helped those in need. In 2026, what new possibilities will present themselves for us to bless others?
As we look ahead to what lays before us, what will we do in this new year?
There are endless possibilities and opportunities for us to be a blessing. This gives me hope. In a time when so much seems chaotic and simply a mess, we can be a blessing. When there are wars and upheaval in so many places, we can be a force for love, and peace, and understanding. When the world seems to be going in crazy directions, we have the opportunity to be a calm loving presence in our community and world.
This is what a new year feels like to me, a year of hope. I personally hope we can lead through our words, actions, and giving in a way that will make a huge impact. We don’t do what we do for show, or for acknowledgement, we do it because we are a blessed people and want to pass those blessings on.
My prayer for each of us in this new year is a renewed sense of hope and love will be poured into our spirit. May God present us with new ways to meet new challenges, and may we be ready to present the very image of God to all.
Your companion on the Way,
Pastor Tom
