Dr. Tom Waitschies
Tom is a native Texan, born and raised in San Antonio. He has lived in many parts of Texas with a variety of careers. Prior to answering a call to ministry, Tom served as a police officer in Houston, and then worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in San Antonio, Midland, and finally Dallas.
Tom joined the church through the Highland Hills UMC, a predominately African-American congregation in the southern sector of Dallas. While serving as a young adult Sunday School teacher, member of the choir, and president of the United Methodist Men’s group, Tom received a call to ministry. Needing to complete his education, Tom received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Texas at Dallas, a Master of Divinity, and Doctor of Ministry with honors from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.
During his time in ministry, Tom has served a variety of churches in rural, suburban, and urban settings. His focus has been on mission and reaching out to those beyond the walls of the church. He has led mission trips to diverse locations such as Brazil, South America; Zimbabwe, Africa; and New Orleans, Louisiana. For Tom, the opportunity to be in mission presents itself in every place and time.
In his time of relaxing, Tom enjoys reading, movies, travel, and sometimes just being a homebody sitting on the patio enjoying the day.
